an anthology of messages to makers
Dear Maker is an interactive online project that collects and presents stories of the hand made, inviting members of the public to write a message to a 'maker'. These messages are collated together on this Dear Maker website as an anthology.
Anyone can read the messages regardless of whether they have contributed to the anthology or not. Come back over time and watch how the collection grows. Submissions can be made here on the 'submit' page NOW ongoing. A diversity of people are encouraged to participate in and enjoy this mutual act of sharing. Dear Maker sits at an intersection between making and narrative - a space where people can reflect, share stories and collectively document a history and sentiment of the hand made. |
WHAT? / HOW?/WHEN?
Participants may choose to write to a jeweller who made their favourite piece, or perhaps the designer who envisaged it, or maybe the miner who unearthed the stone, or the smelter who refined the metal. A message could be addressed to a sculptor, a ceramicist, a watchmaker or a cobbler. Your message may be to the person who made your engagement ring, to your tattoo artist, or even to the diver who found the pearl in your favourite pendant. A message can be addressed to the maker, to the material, or even to the earth that combusted those materials into existence. The brief is open to your own personal interpretation.
The maker may be known to the writer or unknown. The message may be as short or long as desired. You can contribute as many times as you'd like. All submissions to Dear Maker can be anonymous.
